With all the coverage these days regarding the safety of our food (think of the spinach debacle a few years back), what kinds of pesticides are used, and where exactly the food is coming from (much less who’s HANDS have been on them – clean or unclean!), it isn’t any wonder that many people have been switching to other means in order to eat healthier produce.
Some make the switch to buy all organic produce, which can be costlier, but certainly more healthy, as they are supposed to be free from pesticides and chemicals. Many proponents for organic produce claim that even the taste of the food is better than their ordinary, run-of-the-mill, non-organic counterparts.
Others still make a decision to grow their own produce, which they claim is always the best-tasting of them all; this way, they know where the food is coming from, what was used on them, and whether or not the handling of the produce was “clean”. Clearly, this is the safest method of obtaining fresh produce – not to mention the satisfied feelings associated with growing your own food, which some claim to be quite therapeutic. People who grow their own food make one of the best economic arguments for it by declaring that it saves them money. For those of us struggling in a bad economy, growing your own vegetable garden may be the key to maintaining your health whilst saving money in the long haul.
Although growing your own garden sounds economical and seems to be the preferred method for obtaining the freshest, healthiest vegetable produce, knowing how to grow one and tend to one may not be obvious for the average consumer, especially if you’ve had little to no experience or exposure in doing so. Many questions arise, such as, “Where do I start?” and “What kind of fertilizer do I use?”
Some of the key items you’ll need to know about growing your own vegetable garden include:
* What is the real difference between in-organic and organic fertilizers?
* How to make compost for the nutrients you need to give for your garden
* How to set up a system that works, such as where to plot out your gardening site
* How to protect your garden from weather and pests
* The best methods for planting seeds, and what type of soil should be used
Mastering the above skills may not come naturally, so some research may be required. There are many suggestions out there on how to create your own garden, but they need to include at least the above key items if you are to succeed in developing one.Stormwater Drain
